Music downloads have a sordid past. The first people that worked out how to share files on the computer did so to share their music with their friends. These types of music download broke the copyright laws as non of the people that conducted music downloads in the past paid for the music! Fortunately the laws and security measures that surround music downloads make it difficult for people to download music for free. This obviously makes it much fairer for the musicians.
Music downloads have recently attracted headline press coverage. In November 2007 British band Radiohead pioneered a scheme which allowed people to download their music and pay a price that the consumer chose. The fact that the consumer was allowed to name their price caused shock across the music download industry. Fortunately the experiment was well observed and the band reputedly made good money from their Album. Nevertheless whether or not this type of pricing structure will work across the board has been openly questioned. Many believe that offer by Radiohead to allow the consumer to name their own price for their music download was only successful as a one off marketing stunt and that if the theory were to be adopted across the entire music download spectrum then consumers would very soon abuse the system to get free music downloads. It remains to be seen.

The latest Music download story that hit the front pages of the press was the news that the government plan to place tighter controls on the internet and one of these controls would be limiting the number of illegal downloads that a person can do on their PC. Rumours suggested that someone wanting to download video footage would have to download video footage from a reputable source that has the rights to the downloaded video footage. If not there would be a three strikes and you are out policy on illegal downloads. Yet another step in the right direction for the music download industry. Critics also suggested that the music download industry would experience the benefits of such legislation within the next few months.

Top 40 Hits
The earliest version of the top 40 hits is said to date back to 1952 when New Musical Express (NME) publication created a list of the 12 top music tracks of the time. A single person called Percy Dickens compiled this forerunner of the top 40 hits chart. He phoned up 20 of the best and well established record stores in the country to ask them who had sold the most. He was involved in overseeing the compilation of the charts for years to come. Although the Top 40 hits may no longer have the personal touch it has grown in popularity since these early days and the modern top 40 hits includes music compiled in a variety of different formats including MP3 downloads.

The download charts are a relatively new phenomenon. The traditional top 40 singles chart and album chart take into sales of music on a wide range of different formats. For example the record, CD, minidisc and most notably MP3 download. The rise in use of personal computers and the increased levels of technology have made the download charts one of the best indicators of the popularity of music. All of the sales that are made through MP3 download websites can be tracked to compile the download charts. In many ways this is a more comprehensive way of recognising the popularity of music and it is certain to be the case that music downloads will one day be the most popular method of purchasing music.
